About the Item

Description

This original guan is one of the most famous and important Yuan dynasty (1279-1368) Guanyin jars ever made. It belongs to a series of eight related large jars, each with a narrative scene.

The guan (large and wide bodied jars with high shoulders) depicts China’s ancient militarist Guiguzi riding in a carriage pulled by a tiger and a leopard down a mountain to save his student Sun Bin, who was trapped by enemies.

Not only is this one of the most famous objects to appear in a Chinese auction, but it set the record for any Asian work of art when it sold at Christie's London on 11 June 2005 for GBP15.666 million.

The artworks we display and sell are replicas of the originals, all handmade by famous ceramic artists in Jingdezhen. From the molding of the printing embryo to the painting, pouring of glaze, and mounting of the firing, they are all fired one to one according to the Yuan blue and white craftsmanship.
