Qing Dynasty Qianlong Emperor (1736–1795) official kiln porcelain vase. This Yangcai ‘Deer and Crane’ Garlic-Head Vase stands as a masterpiece of imperial porcelain artistry, uniting vivid natural imagery with profound symbolism. The deer (lu, 禄) represents official success and prosperity, while the crane (he, 鹤) embodies longevity and noble virtue — together expressing the auspicious blessing “Luhe Tongchun” (禄鹤同春), meaning prosperity and long life in harmony.

The garlic-head form (suantouping, 蒜头瓶), with its bulbous mouth and elegant curves, adds balance and distinction. Each vase is handcrafted using traditional imperial kiln techniques and natural mineral pigments, then fired up to 1280°C in kiln to be finished products, keeping forever like a diamond. Its refined enamels and exquisite brushwork reflect the poetic elegance and technical perfection of the Qianlong imperial workshops.

About the Item

Description

The vase belonged to the Famille-rose or “yangcai” type of Chinese porcelain, known for its vibrant colours and expert level of craftsmanship. The highly complex painting was extremely labour-intensive to achieve a luxurious and multi-layered effect. This particular vase features an extraordinary handscroll scene with meticulous detail of deer, cranes, mountains and forests. This kind of auspicious symbolism reflected the benevolent governance of the Emperor: the paradisiacal landscape is likely a rendering of the lush vegetation of one of the Imperial pleasure gardens.
