This Doucai (Contrasting Colors) ‘Lotus’ Stem Cup represents one of the most refined artistic achievements of the Chenghua imperial kilns. Adorned with delicately outlined lotus blossoms and scrolling tendrils, the design symbolizes purity, spiritual enlightenment, and harmonious renewal — central virtues of Ming court aesthetics.
Executed in the signature Doucai technique, the motifs are first painted in underglazed cobalt blue, then filled with brilliant overglaze enamels of green, red, yellow, and turquoise, creating subtle layers of contrast and luminosity. Each cup is handcrafted using traditional imperial kiln methods, painted with natural mineral pigments, and fired up to 1280 °C in kiln to be finished products, keeping forever like a diamond.
During the Chenghua reign, imperial artisans perfected this delicate style, blending Chinese spiritual symbolism with early Western-influenced color chemistry, giving rise to porcelains prized for their softness, precision, and lyrical beauty.

Description
The stem cup is finely decorated on the exterior with lotus scrolls in doucai palette, and the spreading stem foot is encircled at the top by a bow-string band, all between double blue-line borders.
