Qing Dynasty Qianlong Emperor (1736 – 1795) official kiln porcelain vase. This Imperial Doucai ‘An Ba Xian’ (‘Eight Immortals’) Globular Vase exemplifies the spiritual elegance and refined color mastery of Qianlong’s imperial workshops. The Ba Xian, symbols of immortality in Daoist legend, represent blessings of longevity, wisdom, and prosperity. Each figure is outlined in underglazed cobalt blue and filled with vivid overglazed Famille Rose enamels, creating a harmonious Doucai (Contrasted Colors) palette.

Every vase is handcrafted using authentic imperial kiln methods, painted with natural mineral pigments enhanced by Western-influenced color techniques, and fired up to 1280 °C in kiln to be finished products, keeping forever like a diamond. Its graceful globular form and luminous colors embody the Qianlong Emperor’s pursuit of spiritual balance and aesthetic perfection.

Description

Potted with a bulbous body rising to a tall, slightly waisted neck, the vase is well enameled in the doucai and famille rose palettes, on the body with the anbaxian, ‘Eight Daoist Emblems’, each tied with flowing ribbons, amid leafy scroll issuing lotus blossoms in two rows, all between lappets at the foot and a band of cloud-shaped collar at the shoulder. The neck is painted with four lotus blossoms, with beneath pendent double-fish and wind chimes below.

About “TianQiuPing”

Tianqiuping (‘Globular’ vase) was created during the Ming dynasty. It is characterized by a small mouth, straight neck, globular body, and slightly concave base. During the Qing dynasty particularly in through the Qianlong period these became court favorites and were made using a wide variety of decorations. Among the wide range of antique Chinese vases this particular form is among the most enduring.
