Description

This spherical vase is an innovation of the Xuande era, named after the ball-like round stomach. During the Qing dynasty particularly in through the Qianlong period these became court favorites and were made using a wide variety of decorations. Among the wide range of antique Chinese vases this particular form is among the most enduring.

This vase is large and straight, imposing and firm, with a simple and unassuming shape, decorated on the rounded body and straight neck with dragons in clouds. The mouth rim is surrounded by a band of lonicera pattern, contrasting with the fierceness of the dragon.
